Kenna and I dug this plot a year ago. It is a traffic calming bay on a busy road in Falmouth which was just a tangle of weeds and very poor soil. We planted marguerittes, bronze fennel, dahlia, geranium, poppies, nasturtium and strawberries! A year on it is looking good. There are still some gaps and we have just sown some calendula seeds, nigella, 'poached egg' plants, and candytuft. We are still doing battle with nettles and litter but we were delighted to see a wildflower (Campion, I think) appear in the bed and we have left them in.
We are currently taking cuttings and sowing perennials for another traffic calming bay a bit further along the road. Mostly gravel and lots of people walk over it, so we are preparing some hardy and drought tolerant plants - lavender, oregano, thyme, helianthemum, pinks. We are aiming to plant this up in the Autumn when the plants are a bit bigger and less likely to get trampled on or mown over by the Council!
The original plan to plant in a carpark in Falmouth was abandoned when the Council finally decided to do it themselves.
Anyone interested in joining us for future digs or with any suggestions for guerrilla activity elsewhere in Cornwall then do get in touch.
