Greetings fellow green thumb.

Just so happen to come across article on abc offbeat news.

I am located in Wolli Creek.

I guess we wait a bit till more people reply to your Sydney post.

Do you have any ideas so far?

Regards,
Iann.

I'm in East Sydney (yes it is a real place, just before Darlinghurst) and looking for some
street gardeners around the area, given that there is no exposed soil left in the place...

Ah it's amazing the power of the ABC News site, where I also saw the article Smiley

Hey guys,

I am in the inner west, Glebe actually and would love to get this happening around the inner west and the city. I didn't see this article, a few of us wanted to plant natives in vacant lots and deserted bits of grass and soil around the area, and decided guerilla styles was best... then my friend told me that there is already a movement in this funnily enough called guerilla gardening, which is super convenient because it means really the groundwork has been done and we can learn from other people!!

So where do we start... anybody in our area got ideas for our first plot and also where to get cheap plants or cuttings and things?? Start of small and let it grow yeah??

Hi, I'm in Newtown and am keen too. Actually, I used to live in Glebe. There's a great community garden there, but it's pretty limited space wise. Anyway, I'd be keen to do some guerrilla gardening around the inner west - I'm sick of all this concrete!

Let me know if you have any ideas of where to start etc.

Hi there,
I'm in Zetland... The "bermuda triangle" of suburbs (behind Surry Hills, next to Alexandria)
Concrete city.
More green definitely needed around these suburbs.
GG anyone?

Yeah, count me in! I guess if there's a few people who are interested then the next step is to look for possible locations. Then you can work out what plants you'd need etc. I kinda like the idea of doing something a bit unexpected, something that doesn't just look like the council put it there.  I also reckon a fairly small space would be good to start with.

Ok then people - I'm keen. (I'm Melody too)
Let's get together Smiley
I guess it's a little awkward but we're not going to get anywhere being shy.
I'm reading Richard Reynolds book - On Guerrilla Gardening...Very nice and full of lovely examples but a bit northern hemisphere centric. I am trying to research some basics about native plants..which would be fun but all sorts of sunflower greenery is exciting..? Yes? I have Lime thumbs...drying out and eaten by mysterious bugs. But we can help each other right Smiley
So... a picnic?
A PICNIC!
Saturday August 4th!
How does that sound??
Well...post something if you think it's an ok idea.
We can meet up and see what we think we're interested in doing. I just want to do something simple and hopeful and positive...without too much sydney clique-iness involved. Sound good!!??
Anyone want to pick a spot. I'm at mothers temporarily after some travels but hope to be back in the inner west before my mental strength expires.
Victoria Park? Camperdown Park? Amanda, Bron, Kelly Mudtoy and Scott - We're all inner city folk so I hope you can all make it. I hope you people with further to travel don't resent a city setting. Please come along.
Bring a friend, a pet, a plate, BOOKS!!!!..any information you think might be helpful.
Maybe I can make some flyers...draw in some locals.
My number is 0422 901 202 if you want to say hi

A Picnic! Awesome! Great idea Smiley  Victoria park good cos it's pretty central. Only thing is, I think that the first Saturday in August is the 2nd... and unfortunatley I've got something on that day (I'd be free at like, 4:30 or 5pm but that's kinda late for a picnic) Sunday lunchtime on the 3rd would be cool, otherwise the next weekend which will be Saturday 9th?

Hear yee hear yee!!

The first annual monthly GUERRILLA GARDENER PICNIC!

Victoria park Glebe - by the lake. Corner of Parramatta Rd and City Rd.
If your coming in from further a field the Broadway shopping centre opposite offers 3 hours free parking.
I'll wear a green top so I'm easier to find.
Old and Young!
Ladies and chaps, green thumbs and cactus killers..let's get together and see if we'd like to do some planting together.

...at least more than just me and Bron.

Bring...nibbles and books and maybe some seeds.

email me if you'd like to chat ms.melwilliams@gmail.com

Ah yes, a picnic.  Good idea.  Could it be a later picnic rather than an earlier one, as I work six days a week until 3 pm.  Of course I could come late if you're all still there.

Hi.....I'm based in the inner west too, a bit further out, at Dulwich Hill. Have some experience with community gardens and bush regeneration/ re-establishment, but none with gg.
I would be keen for a picnic this Saturday or some other time that suits.

<wistfully> Don't suppose any of the more northern ones amongst you would like to come up and go a guerilla attack on the Central Coast one weekend? I'm in the area of Toowoon Bay/The Entrance, a pretty area with deserted gardens, neglected parks and all sorts of other likely-looking sites ...

Hi, I'm Kat, I'm from Castle Hill (but I spend a lot of time in the city).
I'm interested in doing some of the guerilla gardening stuff, but I don't know much about it yet!
Anyway, nice to meet you all!

I'm in Zetland... The "bermuda triangle" of suburbs (behind Surry Hills, next to Alexandria)
Concrete city.

<smiling happily> I live a long way away now, but many years ago I used to live in Hillsdale and work in Zetland - I'd take the bus to Kingsford, have a coffee and a croissant at the bakery there, then walk to work (I don't mind walking). this was back in the early eighties, and I practiced a slightly different garden-related form of seditious subversion: as I walked alongh, I'd snack on the pink and white lilli-pillis the council had planted as shade trees along the road, and I'd harvest the purple, white, red, black and yellow chillis from a bush in someone's perennial garden bed that hung invitingly through the fence and chow down on these so-called "ornamental" chillis as my aprez-breakfast.

Reverse-guerilla gardening. Ah, happy memories.

I'm up for some gardening. Live in the Bondi area.

I think coordinating small events regularly would be easier than a big group which may or may not happen.

there are some very committed people who are restoring and educating people on the conservation values of Wolli Creek.

I know the person who has set up this website - so contact her about what she has done and what you could do for Wolli Creek

Hi,

My name is Treffyn, I'm a student at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) studying documentary production. We were looking to make a five minute documentary on Guerrilla Gardening in the Sydney metropolitan area.

If anybody was interested in getting involved please either reply to this thread or e-mail me at 10564995@uts.edu.au

It would involve having a crew of about two or three just tag along (and help out with the dig too!) while you were planting.

We would be looking at filming a couple of expeditions within the next month at times that were suitable for all. We're all very flexible. So if you would like to be involved in any way or have any ideas, please get in contact!

I saw the article too, I'd love to get involved. I'm in Glenorie, I wonder if any of the numerous nurseries near my place would donate plants for such a cause?

I'm also broke, and looking for ways to get plants for free. So far nurseries, even ones with terminally dead plants in odd corners, haven't allowed me near their stock, but I've been planting more seed than I need for my own garden so that I have plants for GGing, and I've been stealing cuttings - the odd sprig of rosemary, elder etc, as I go for walks around the place. All my seedlings are ridiculously small but my cuttings are all doing well with the exception of only two: two dying out of a couple of dozen is not a bad success-rate - I put it down to treating the rooting end with honey before planting.

And just yesterday an internet-friend of mine, knowing that I;ve gotten involved, has offered me all her extra seed - she might plant only a few seeds out of ech pack, and has nothing to do with the rest, so I have a valuable resource coming to me in a parcel soon. I've been recycling collected pots and tubes from buying live plants, but I'm going to have to germinate a lot of them in my own eco-tubes, I can tell already. Starting to save the raw materials for eco-tubes!

There is a geurilla garden in Sydney already.

I don't know when it appeared, but I put a photo of it up on my street art site the other day.

It is at the corner of Sth Dowling St and Cleveland Sts, in the middle of the intersection, above the Eastern Distributor.

The photo is here -

It is part of Wallup, an online gallery of street art, which is here -
http://www.wallup.net/

My friend Aaron is here, and he is looking forward to joining up with you all to create some guerilla gardens in the future.  My wife Tricia might become a part of it too.  As for me, I'll be happy to display photos of them.

Also, check Woolloomooloo at the corner of Palmer & Cathedral.  There is a flash garden there, looked a bit like a Mental As Anything album cover at its best, looking a bit tired now.  It featured a Hills Hoist with the letters from 'Woolloomooloo' hanging around it.  Only 'W' & 'O' remain.

Hello, I just joined. I live near Bondi. It's still a good time of year for planting... before it gets too hot. Happy to green up any of the city-based areas (and inner west) -  not keen to be a solo soldier though. Are there 2 or 3 people who want to have a go at something this weekend? 8 or 9 Nov.

Also, a friend of mine works for a company that does a lot of local council work and he is always offering me plants they would otherwise just throw away. Like A LOT of plants... it would require a bit of planning though for such a large scale attack.

If you have ideas for this weekend (or next - might be too hard to arrange so soon) shoot me a message. Don't forget I'm a newbie so I'd love the input of some more experienced soldiers.

Did the picnic happen?

Bye for now

Hi all   notice there are a lot of inner westies putting up their hands.   I live in Petersham and have just organised with the Council to allow me to plant out the new Nature Strip they have put in our street.  I tried to get the street interested with no luck but I figure lead by example so I will be planting out the strip next to our house.  As its on the corner its a good chunk of land.   Any advice on how to stabilse the topsoil quickly and what might be good native plants especially ground covers to use.   Anyone interested in helping?

Hi all

Although I am located on the "north shore" of sydney I do not consider myself as a snob due to the fact that we moved in while this area was considered semi rural and therefore was affordable the city has only cought-up with us.

my area has lots of grass roadsides and I hope that people can come up with a way of GG ing an eddible flower patch (food and medicinal plants that look good too and without the typical rows)

I have not asked the neighbours yet but I don't think that they will mind a GG or two.

I also had an idea of setting up a group in my area that the elderly or less able might call for help in thier own gardens / road sides is just an idea at this stage.
