So I've been busy for the last couple of months mulching 'flower beds' on publicly owned land near where I live.

Taking advice from the Florida thread, I think it is, I made a few seed bombs and planted/threw them down first, especially in the first location.

A wide angle view of what I did. You can see where the pile of wood chip had been for a week or so. In the grassy patch you can see where the grass has gone yellow from lack of sunlight. Within a few days it should be fine again.

The original photo was taken to show the city council the problem with graffiti, luckily I found it the other day. It's a good 'before' photograph.

Nice work.. What did the city council say about the Grafitti.. I mean, is it within their policy to take them all out or just in 'key' locations.. Did you or they remove the grafitti?

Have you gone back to your chestnut seedlings? How did they do over the winter?

I haven't had a good look at my favourite chestnuts yet this year. they are partially inaccesible behind some railings. I'll check them and get back to you later in the week.

As for the grafitti, the city council hire a private company to remove it. They are there most days!

just saw this online in the paper today.

some money allocated to combat grafitti.

I had a look at my chestnut trees yesterday. they are pretty good. One is quite big, about 1.2m. Three others are still only 300 to 400mm tall. They are slightly overlooked or shaded out. I did try cutting back the offending vegetation last autumn, so I hope this season they will prosper. A fourth of this group (small ones) is *completely* overgrown. I must have not been able to find it last autumn. I'll get my secateurs at it this weekend, probably.

I just had a proper look at these pictures, that is A LOT of wood chip! Good work! Must have taken time to wheelbarrow it out along that stretch, did you do it by night or were you brave enough to do it in daylight?  Grin

Heya cb, yeah it WAS a lot of wood chip.

I did it all during daylight hours, just not making eye contact with commuters or undesireables! sorry to anyone who was trying to initiate a chat but couldn't cos I wouldn't look at them!

These wallflowers are in a few years. I can't remember if I transplanted them, so I'm going to take the credit for it!


and a wider view. The smell, or aromatic perfume from them is lovely!

So, last Saturday afternoon, there was a rally of 14 boats desending the, eh, rapids. The locks on the Grand Canal and Circular Line.

check it out.



the crocosmia are still going, though I don't see flowers on them that much....Lucky to survive having been mown a couple of times.

The house is getting a make over, well, sort of. Out with the old at any rate. Incl woody wallflowers. But, waste not, want not and Reuse and Recycle. I brought five or six plants, cut back hard and planted them out and about....

Well, my word is my honour.  I thought it was, at any rate. But hours after I said to the lovely Grace "no, I don't spread wood chip anymore, incase there's any alien invasive species mixed in with it" I did the following....for shame!!!

First, I dug out ye olde wheelie bin


Dragged it about a kilometre to the  local community garden/woodchip supply and filled it...


Then the km and more back!!! Where my previous efforts had turned to muck!

Right about here should be a good place to start...right?

hmmm, what you'd call "soakage"
