Growing algae on riverbanks?

Hello!  :)

As the title suggests, I have been toying around with the idea of growing algae on riverbanks. I know little about algae so please do correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that they produce oxygen, provide food and shelter for insects and so encourage local biodiversity, and I think I have read somewhere that they can act as pollution "filtrants"... although this might only be the case for streams?

If you have any knowledge to share on the topic, please do!  ;D   I would love to learn more before I attempt anything...

(For the record, I live in Paris, and was thinking of targetting several spots along the river Seine.)
