PARK(ing) DAY - 21 September 2007
« on: August 23, 2007, 03:22:16 PM »
On 16 November 2005 an art collective called REBAR filled a parking space in downtown San Francisco with a miniature park.  They objected to 70% of downtown being used for private vehicles.  For two hours the turf, a tree, railings and a bench provided a patch of greenery and a vision of an alternative city.  Since then they have encouraged people to do the same in their street around the world.  And the authorities don't seem the mind either, since these gardeners pay the parking meter!  The mayor of San Francisco gave up his parking space for a park in 2006 and their website shows councillors in Manchester England lounging on a PARK(ing) space too.

This years is on 21 September 07.
