Hi I've recently moved to South Manchester and complete gardening novice but wonder if there's a group I could tag on to?

Cheers

Hi Clare

I'm in Rochdale - not very close but possibly the closest yet! I think seedbombing might be my thing as I don't get much time! Let's see if anyone else turns up...

Hi Clare,

I just joined the Manchester group, and live in Altrincham.  Don't know how big/established the local group is, or if there's are formal organiser / organisation.   Am having a bit of trouble finding my way round the site, and haven't been able to find anything specifically related to M/Cr as yet.  Would be great if there was a way for the local group to hook up together...

Cheers

I have just heard about guerrilla gardening and am very interested. Is there a Manchester group?  Am new to gardening and have some freinds who may also be interested.  Look forward to hearing from you. Roll Eyes

Hey there

I too am new to this gardening lark but keen to get my fingers muddy! Just clearing an bramble-covered allotment, so in the mood for a challenge - anybody any ideas about patches and plots or started on digs in Manc?

I too have just joined the Manchester Guerillas.  I live in the lovely Miles Platting in a block of flats opposite a grassed area.  I think it would be perfect for planting a wild flower meadow as it doesn't get cut by anyone.  Does anyone know how i go about doing this?

Ahhh, sounds like a patch worth trying.  Wild flower meadows are suprisingly tricky.  I met a guerrilla gardener, Margaret in Devon who planted one.  She started by strimming the old shaggy grass really short and then planting small wild flowers (red campion, cowslip) in the grass.  I had a look at the National Trust's Mead (wildflower meadow by a posh name) in Buckland Abbey in Devon this week where my mum volunteers and they've struggled to grow one from seed as grass has taken over...  have a go... or perhaps try clearing small patches and mixing in more obviously decorative stuff, nastursiums, poppies or something.   By concentrating on pockets within the wilderness you'll make a small more manageable start and can expand as confidence grows.  This could of course be a solo battle too.  (These boards sometimes blow into life, sometimes not, it's often a solo guerrilla or someone who just says "I'm going here at this time X" that makes it happen). Good luck!

Hi Emma!

I'm in Miles Platting too!  I live in one of these 'towerblocks'!

Definitely up to doing a bit of guerilla gardening in bland Manchester!

Has there been anything planned yet?

I have the terrible misfortune to live in Rochdale - one of the most actively anti-environmental towns in the UK.
For over a decade now (Since I moved here), I've been planting trees and shrubs in the areas where these things are supposed to go (Invariably according to 'Council plans') or have maintained Council-planted trees (Which are almost always left to die).
More often than not, I'm opposing Council 'Green workers' who are payed to kill anything that pumps chlorophyll and genuinely can't tell the difference between an oak and a privet.
In that time, over half have been killed, either by amatur vandals or professional Council workers. Nonetheless, this still leaves a few hundred successes.
Anyhow:
Really thrilled to finally be in contact with similar folk. Just knowing 'You're not alone' is good in itself.

Thanks for being there chaps.
Best:

Hi Manchester Guerrilla Gardeners.

I want to do some Guerrilla Gardening in Moss Side - and I want you to join me!

The bit of land I want to do first is here:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=101201435877150701435.00044e7861d597eacfe6a&t=h&z=19

It's on the corner of Lloyd Street and Moss Lane East. It a patch of grass with some trees and bushes and people walk through it to cut across or to get to the bus stop, so it's used pretty often. It also looks grim.

So, I propose that on Saturday 14th June we meet at the Guerrilla Gardening Patch at 11am with trowels, plastic bags for rubbish, plants, seeds, bulbs, forks, spades, wellies and whatever else. You can bring plants or seeds from your garden/box or from a shop.

Guerrilla Gardening is supposed to transform a spot for years, not just a few weeks. So if anybody comes along, we'll talk about how to keep it going - when next to meet, how to maintian and monitor it, etc.

Please forward this to whoever you think would be keen on being involved - the more the merrier!

Ta, Ben

Hi there Manchester Guerrillas!

I was at Urbis today and just got to know about this fantastic movement!
I'm in the south of Manchester and even though I'm not very familiar with gardening I would very much like to help out so whoever organizes our first dig, count with me!

Cheers!

Hi! I'm new to both gardening and GG, but I'm very enthusiastic, and would love to lend a hand where needed. I live in Whitefield, where my landlord has given me free reign over the garden, but I would much prefer to cultivate some more well-tread areas. Good luck with your projects, and give me a shout-out if you need a couple hands! - unieuph@hotmail.com

Hi I've just joined after reading about the guerillas in the guardian weekend magazine who also mention  seed bombs (a mixture of compost, wildflower seeds, clay powder and water) to be lobbed onto waste ground. Anybody heard of these, do we make them or buy them, and if we make them where on earth do we get clay powder,

Hello fellow wannabe gardeners

It seems there are quite a few of us from the central / south manc area who want to get our hands dirty!

I think we should put something into action and call up a shortlist of 3 areas to make more appealing as I'm fed up with looking at this concrete city.

So please email me at emma-jane.brazier@sky.com if you are really interested in organising a little get together to make Manchester a prettier place.  If we all club together tools etc. won't be a problem and with minimal financial input I know that we can make a real difference.
