Advertising At Birmingham Pride
« on: May 16, 2011, 09:54:25 AM »
I would like to make people aware of the guerrilla gardening campaign around Birmingham's gay scene, but wondered if advertising it a Birmingham Pride would be a good idea or not, I was only thinking a couple of leaflets, but would a table be a good idea? Would advertising at all be a good idea? Could we go in the Pride March with it? please offer any thoughts or advice & shall take them into account before making any decisions. We generally have the support of the community but just think it might increase numbers & make some of the bigger projects possible.

(Not very constructive advice, I know)

So these are my mission statements (I'm copy & pasting them as my computer hates me)

(Poster 1)
Why we do it

Many places in public that are owned by the council or private companies are not looked after properly or at all in some cases, this can be for many reasons including:-
A lack of awareness of the area & it?s state
A lack of finances
It?s not high on the priority list
This area has no for it?s updating for at least 2 years & with the way the Birmingham City Council is having to make cuts may even be longer still. With the Coalition Government opting for/forcing the Big Society among us we can take action & make this a better place for all. Is it too much for us to have a Gay Scene to be proud of, I think not, so lets plant a brighter future for the area & hide the industrial nature of the area with a beautiful garden to share it?s delights with the world.

(poster 2)
How to Help

We are constantly looking for new members & supporters, so if you have the time or the resources to help us please let us know. We are looking for three types of people.

Active Members
These are the people who go out there & dig, we plant & weed areas, water plants, plant management, do litter picks and are the first line in action for the gardening projects.

Maintaining Members
These people water & do litter picks when possible, this help maintains the beauty of the area & health of the plants.

Supportive Members
Supportive members don?t physically take part in the planting or maintaining but can help by providing extra plants or if local, providing a water point where we can fill up from to water plants.

(Poster3)
Our Mission

To brighten up the Gay Scene for all to enjoy, making it a beautiful relaxing place to be, so that encourages more people to the area & make it a Gay Scene to be Proud of aesthetically as well as through it?s friendliness
To encourage wildlife in the area, including:-
bees which are on the decline, but are needed to pollinate crops & flowers
lacewings, hoverflies & ladybirds which eat aphids.
To involve people who are new to gardening, to encourage them to get out there & garden more, brighten up their own green patches if all they have is a concrete yard.
To give people who don?t have gardens an opportunity to have a go
To have fun & meet new people

Grand!

Don't understand this bit on the first poster though (guessing it's a copy-paste related issue?): "This area has no for it?s updating for at least 2 years"

Have toyed with the idea of using the poster, but thought it might create the wrong impression

The way I do it is upload the photo at tinypic.com and use the bulletin board code provided to paste it into my post.  You can check it works by using preview.

You can use tinypic (like diasthema said), or flickr or photobucket etc. But if you don't want to create an external account on one of those pages, you can attach them here directly. Just below where you write your message it says "Additional options". There, you can attach pics just like in an email. Just make sure to shrink them first, the limit is quite low.

Looking forward to seeing the pictures!  ;D

Pride went well, we had our stall which went OK, I was giving out my leftover seeds pumpkin, chilli, marigold, sweet pea & coriander seeds that were harvested from my own crops previously, also had lollies. I also ended up line dancing with an olive tree, which was a novel experience (it was the memorial tree from the interfaith ritual which had loads of ribbons tied to it [I run the LGBT Pagan group]). The tree shall be planted next Tuesday.

No line dancing with an olive tree gave me an appetite for food, but I did get a bit of interest, our next mission is Operation Lavender Field.

Wel lavender did get planted but not a field of it, we planted 4 lavenders & 4 rosemary around the memorial tree, we we going to plant it off the main street but the area we had planned for it didn't have deep enough soil so it got planted on Hurst Street the main street, photos will follow soon.
