Guerrilla Harvesting Maple Syrup?

(I put this under edibles, too, but just in case I'm putting it here as well.)

I was thinking of harvesting maple syrup from public trees like the ones in the woods/park near my house. Is this possible? Dangerous? Has it ever been attempted before? It seems like a cool idea, and that time of year will soon be upon us...

Please advise.

I read an article last autumn about people in Canada doing this, so yes.  Apparently you can do it with birches as well.

Like I said on the "Edibles" thread:

Maple syrup is collected by drilling a hole in the tree, am I right? If I am, then anyone considering this should also consider the risk of infection to the tree, as any damage to the trunk is a growing ground for fungus and other diseases.
