This year May 1 is a Saturday, so I'm hoping the 4th annual International* Sunflower Guerrilla Gardening Day will be bigger and better than ever.

In brief... it's a time to plant sunflower seeds.

Do sign up for the Facebook event here and invite others: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=301535539424&ref=ts

More info here too: http://www.guerrillagardening.org/ggsunflower.html

(*It's International in the loosest sense of the word, I'm aware that mother nature unhelpfully excludes the southern hemisphere on this day, as well as a fair proportion of the northern hemisphere too, but I didn't name the event and "Temperate and Semi Arid Northern Hemisphere Sunflower Guerrilla Gardening Day" doesn't trip of the tongue so well.)

I'll be taking part for the 4th time.  Really looking forward to it.

In the past I've sown seeds in situ on Mayday and the flowers are  blooming in August sometime.

This year I've sown into about 20 pots that have cloches made from plastic drink bottles.

I'm expanding beyond the wildlife garden where they've been so far and will put a few next to the High Street.

Nearly 2000 now signed up to the Facebook global event, and lots more specific local events popping up now too, such as Chicago, Frankfurt and now one from me in London. Here's what we are doing:

I want to help guerrilla gardeners in London get lots done where they live. Here's the plan:

1. Have a think about where would be good for sunflowers in your neighbourhood: e.g. generously proportion tree pits with reasonably deep soil, shabby shrubberies, neglected flower beds. verges that aren't too grassy.

2. Meet at noon on Saturday 1 May at the centre of the large Elephant & Castle North Roundabout to share your plans (i.e. keep these details off line so we don't get any trouble), recruit help, pick up more planting advice and collect free seeds

3. Head out and guerrilla garden

4. Gather in the evening at a venue (TBC).

There are more details on Facebook, so if you're a user please explore these two pages and sign up.

Is the southern hemisphere really exempt from this day?  Here in Sydney it's still plenty warm..  I reckon the flowers would grow and bloom still...  One thing though... I might be a little late...  Are they supposed to be flowering on the day, or just sown?

In real life my signature looks different...  better.  Kinda scrawley jagged and loopy.
