My dad bought a house, and someone who lived there before him was obviously an ignorant bastard... Washing line tied around a weeping birch, many years ago.

Victoria, London.

Rochester Row, at the junction of Vincent Square.

In fact, around that corner is the RHS Lindley Library which has been closed recently but according to their website is to reopen on July 2nd 2012.  Do you think someone could go in and ask them to pop out and release this tree? I'd have done so, but I'd no tools with me......
Failing that, are there any London based GGers that could release this poor tree???

It's wheelchair accessible, at least!!

then, last Friday I had the chance to borrow a wire cutter and so I did!!!

I unwrapped the wire from  this tree. I'll go back  with a wire cutters and remove it next Sunday.  I think I'll leave the 7 - 9 cm of wire buried in the trunk. seems less cruel than to damage the bark, possibly, by tearing  it out completely....

Tree, released!

I left the bit of wire buried inside, deep inside the trunk. I thought it would do more damage to retrieve it than leave it in....

I/We failed in the bid to save this tree. Regular viewers may remember from Reply 33 and subsequent replies.  It had started to lean precipitously in  recent weeks. Then, the other day I went by and I was met by this sight...

I'm falling behind in my cataloguing of tree releasing. These two were in the last couple of months outside the delightful Delights Coffee shop in the IDA Car Park on the Southern Cross Road, Bray, Co. Wicklow.

They are both, both Variegated and Standard sycamore trees, which got my attention initially....

I can't believe it's been three years since I released these trees for the first time. See Reply 39 and onwards...

Plus ca change, plus cela meme chose, as they say....

this week, I've had the blurb from Sister Act 2 in my head, "back in the habit"!
Anyway, I paid a return visit.

https://maps.google.ie/maps?q=42+Beechdale+Crescent,+Tallaght&hl=en&ll=53.269274,-6.338692&spn=0.000026,0.021136&sll=53.269386,-6.338968&layer=c&cbp=13,40.87,,0,4.2&cbll=53.269274,-6.338692&hnear=42+Beechdale+Crescent,+Dublin+24,+County+Dublin&t=m&z=16&panoid=jzeu8i8f55EfqptHupdFPQ

and am happy to say that all support poles have been removed and the trees look remarkably healthy, which is good. Bar one, of course. If you scroll all the way to the end of the road, about 300m  the last house on the right hand side. There's a small tree in the grass verge. It had been fixed to the support pole by a screw!!! So, I removed it and redid the rubber band in a figure of eight. That should help it. Photos to follow later today...

PS Any way to modify the Street View Link???

Right, I've tried to post the following photos twice to no avail recently. So, here goes it again...

Killing two birds with one stone here. I saw, in July that Malmo were playing Drogheda United in  the Europa League qualifying round. Not being a Drogs fan particularly, I didn't pass much notice. They are after all, 80km north of Dublin.  But then, on the morning of the match, I realised that their ground is not up to UEFA standards and had switched the game to the Tallaght Stadium.  Result!!!

So, armed with my vice grips, I joined a load of boisterous Scandanavians for the first leg....
Ah, fourth of July...

Of course, the trees are in  the vicinity of the stadium, that's why I got to kill two birds with the one stone, as it were... See Reply 75

and...

Very dull game.  0-0

However, the thing about Europa League matches, they're like the 150 bus. None for ages, then two come along together and the following week I got to see the return leg of the Zalgiis Vilnius v  St. Patrick's Athletic game.

Great atmosphere there after the 2-2 first leg.  Zalgiris won 2-1 to go through...

here is me, in with the Zalgiris!!! the team came by for a big Acieu after the match...

Taken from (and adapted) the FC Vilnaus Zalgiris Facebook page. Just had to untag myself first!!!

"we haven't gone away, you know!"

just a few I've passed by and could leave well enough  alone!!!

it's been so long,I can't remember where this one is!!!  :P

oooooffffphhh, poor thing...

ahh, that's better...

encore une fois!

Ahhh, this one, it's on the road on the way out to Howth, just past or not to far from the Transport Museum in Howth.

Across town in the leafy suburbs of Castleknock. Castleknock road, about 250m from the Phoenix Park gate.

and after...

this next one is not far away, I need to return with a long handled screwdriver or something to release it fully. A  passerby stopped for a chat and some words of encouragement.

On the north side, just off Grace Park Road...

I'll have to dig out the 'after' photo...                                                      15731

On the John Murray Show on RTE Radio 1 this morning, a woman by the name of Carmel Diviney described the damage done to a couple of faery trees in Tara and has started a campaign to save them and recuperate them.  She has started a Facebook page, here...

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=665922980149157
and on Sunday next July 27th is organising a meetup to remove the 'decorations' that adorn the trees and return them to their natural state. All welcome. I think it's at 2pm

Thanks for sharing these! It's awful to see the trees strapped up. Love the photo where you can see where you removed the strap - it looks like it's breathing again!

Thanks for sharing these! It's awful to see the trees strapped up. Love the photo where you can see where you removed the strap - it looks like it's breathing again!

Thanks for the comment. I passed by tree in Reply 90  today and realised that just 50m away is another one that is very badly choked. I may get a chance to fixe it tomorrow. My other plan is to release a tree on Parliament Street. It's not where the parliament is, City Hall in fact, and it's very busy but with easy access with a claw hammer.

Stay tuned...

Guess whut!?  The tree in Reply 90 has been completely liberated, check it out

and the next tree up the street has been released from its binding....you can see where it had been bound before. And it has a bountiful THREE spacers on it.

Back up the other end of the street two trees have also been attended to. I'd like to think I had some hand act or part in it!!! ;)

Exhibit 1.  The support post has been cut and the binding lowered and loosened.

Same here....

one more, for the road....

All in all, a good day..

I couldn't release this one, it was tied with a rope nearer the bottom and the stake was quite firmly set in the ground.
