Thought it'd be a good idea to start a new thread where everybody can list and find FREE gardening resources.

And here's the first one...

LA City Department of Sanitation offers free compost. You just pick it up yourself. I used to get it in the Valley, but that site's closed now. Right now, the main composting site is in Griffith Park. Their phone number is 323.913.4166. Somebody at the Sanitation Dept told me the Griffith Park compost machine might be broken, so be sure to call before you go to pick some up. But here's their address and a map link showing how to get there:

Griffith Park Composting Facility
5400 Griffith Park Drive
Los Angeles, Ca 90027

City of LA also provides free mulch made from yard trimmings at 8 locations around town.

Bring your own shovel, bag or truck - take as much as you need.

This isn't entirely local and you have to apply to receive them, but they're still free!

City of L.A. also provides free mulch in Griffith Park at the composting facility. However - we used some of this on the Wilton and Odin gardens and I gotta say, it smelled totally weird, sort of a chemical/pine reek which lasted for weeks. This is probably OK on public, non-edible gardens but frankly I wouldn't use it on my own garden.
