Title: Seed Scattering - General Query!
Post by: Flash on May 12, 2008, 04:14:22 PM
Hello there,

I'm a bit of a gardening novice, so please forgive my ineptitude. I purchased the Guerrilla Gardening book and it was talking about those that scatter seeds at certain spots. I have some overgrown grass by my house and have a spare packet of wild flowers that includes field cornflowers, field poppies, ox-eye daisies, cowslip and foxglove.

If I were to sprinkle these seeds around the grass, is there any chance that they would grow/flourish? Would it help if I mowed the grass first? Or would I have to disturb the soil first?  ???

Thanks for any feedback.   ;D

Hiya and welcome,

all those flowers self seed, so, disturbing the soil would help in my opinion. yes, go for it. Try half the packet in an area of disturbed soil and the other in with grass, but cut the grass,  it will help ensure the seeds get down to the ground and also allows light in on them.

good luck

Thanks for the reply, I will disturb the soil and then hopefully I'll get a result. I'll post up some pictures when I get a chance (and assuming it goes according to plan  :P).

Wear cleats?
Walk along, nonchalantly, with your seeds in hand behind your back, dropping as you go... then on your return, shuffle or scuff your feet to cover.
 ;D  I haven't tried this yet.

Alternatively, you could deposit dirt cover the way the guys in the movie "The Great Escape" did... a dirt-filled fabric tube down the pants, with a release cord...  (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057115/)  Pantyhose should come in handy for that...  No, I haven't tried this, either. ;D

Once spread around some wild flower seeds in between some sparse grass, didn't see one come up.

But I probably did get to feed some birds that way.  ;D

It helps the seeds if they're somewhat covered, either by live or cut grass, though cut grass could give the young flowers more light. Is it really high?
