Title: Please Release me, Let me Grow
Post by: tampopo on December 29, 2009, 08:40:25 PM
Wanted to start a thread of choked trees as such...

and "free at last" trees thus...

opposite view.

more to follow in the next while...

When I cut the strap off this one,

the supporting pole fell to the ground!

Nice work! I love seeing a tree that's been freed of any restraints. How did trees ever make it with out our interference?

5 that I've loosened the strap on...

moved the strap down the trunk a bit.

ditto

and here too...

Well that's a relief, I thought I was the only tree destrangulator around.  ;D

I also rescue half dried worms from pavements, soak them for a while, then find a damp bit of earth to stick them into.  :-\

I cut the ties on a group of about 15 trees some 25 years ago ,

when i did it you could get your hands around them ,

Now you could get your arms around them .   :)

Such an awesome thread...  After 25 years the trees still carry the scars of their strangulation, telling the story of how you freed them...  I hope you accompany your actions with some firm letters to the offending council/s

I've still yet to rescue the trees featured in Reply 23. A tout a l'heure.

I went back and loosened it again, a few days later....it'll give it some room to 'ride up with (wear) growth' !!!

I rounded this corner and saw the tree, then I saw the carpenter in the white van behind, taking his lunch break, so I went over and borrowed his claw hammer for two mins. Never let an opportunity to release a tree pass you by....carpe diem...and all that...

last week.

Somehow, I don't have a partner photo for this one. It could be one of the other trees from a different angle and I can't recognise it. I'll go down that street and investigate one day soon...

Victoria, London.

Rochester Row, at the junction of Vincent Square.

In fact, around that corner is the RHS Lindley Library which has been closed recently but according to their website is to reopen on July 2nd 2012.  Do you think someone could go in and ask them to pop out and release this tree? I'd have done so, but I'd no tools with me......
Failing that, are there any London based GGers that could release this poor tree???

It's wheelchair accessible, at least!!

How it should be done. Best practice, I'd say.  (I walked by this tree about 4 times over the weekend, as it transpired...)

It's been a while, but I've had my eye on this one for a while. I pass it quite a lot, so it's 'always on my mind', so to speak...

then, last Friday I had the chance to borrow a wire cutter and so I did!!!
Here is the result.

Oh, this is the tree from Reply 33 (and subsequent Replies...)

I unwrapped the wire from  this tree. I'll go back  with a wire cutters and remove it next Sunday.  I think I'll leave the 7 - 9 cm of wire buried in the trunk. seems less cruel than to damage the bark, possibly, by tearing  it out completely....

Tree, released!

I left the bit of wire buried inside, deep inside the trunk. I thought it would do more damage to retrieve it than leave it in....

Sad news.

I/We failed in the bid to save this tree. Regular viewers may remember from Reply 33 and subsequent replies.  It had started to lean precipitously in  recent weeks. Then, the other day I went by and I was met by this sight...

I'm falling behind in my cataloguing of tree releasing. These two were in the last couple of months outside the delightful Delights Coffee shop in the IDA Car Park on the Southern Cross Road, Bray, Co. Wicklow.

They are both, both Variegated and Standard sycamore trees, which got my attention initially....

I can't believe it's been three years since I released these trees for the first time. See Reply 39 and onwards...

Plus ca change, plus cela meme chose, as they say....

this week, I've had the blurb from Sister Act 2 in my head, "back in the habit"!
Anyway, I paid a return visit.

https://maps.google.ie/maps?q=42+Beechdale+Crescent,+Tallaght&hl=en&ll=53.269274,-6.338692&spn=0.000026,0.021136&sll=53.269386,-6.338968&layer=c&cbp=13,40.87,,0,4.2&cbll=53.269274,-6.338692&hnear=42+Beechdale+Crescent,+Dublin+24,+County+Dublin&t=m&z=16&panoid=jzeu8i8f55EfqptHupdFPQ

and am happy to say that all support poles have been removed and the trees look remarkably healthy, which is good. Bar one, of course. If you scroll all the way to the end of the road, about 300m  the last house on the right hand side. There's a small tree in the grass verge. It had been fixed to the support pole by a screw!!! So, I removed it and redid the rubber band in a figure of eight. That should help it. Photos to follow later today...

PS Any way to modify the Street View Link???

Right, I've tried to post the following photos twice to no avail recently. So, here goes it again...

Killing two birds with one stone here. I saw, in July that Malmo were playing Drogheda United in  the Europa League qualifying round. Not being a Drogs fan particularly, I didn't pass much notice. They are after all, 80km north of Dublin.  But then, on the morning of the match, I realised that their ground is not up to UEFA standards and had switched the game to the Tallaght Stadium.  Result!!!

So, armed with my vice grips, I joined a load of boisterous Scandanavians for the first leg....
Ah, fourth of July...
(http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p305/Kristine518/guerrillagardeningdotorg/MalmoFFLiThornell_zpse6105774.jpg) (http://s131.photobucket.com/user/Kristine518/media/guerrillagardeningdotorg/MalmoFFLiThornell_zpse6105774.jpg.html)
Of course, the trees are in  the vicinity of the stadium, that's why I got to kill two birds with the one stone, as it were... See Reply 75

Very dull game.  0-0

However, the thing about Europa League matches, they're like the 150 bus. None for ages, then two come along together and the following week I got to see the return leg of the Zalgiis Vilnius v  St. Patrick's Athletic game.

Great atmosphere there after the 2-2 first leg.  Zalgiris won 2-1 to go through...

here is me, in with the Zalgiris!!! the team came by for a big Acieu after the match...

On the John Murray Show on RTE Radio 1 this morning, a woman by the name of Carmel Diviney described the damage done to a couple of faery trees in Tara and has started a campaign to save them and recuperate them.  She has started a Facebook page, here...

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=665922980149157
and on Sunday next July 27th is organising a meetup to remove the 'decorations' that adorn the trees and return them to their natural state. All welcome. I think it's at 2pm

Thanks for sharing these! It's awful to see the trees strapped up. Love the photo where you can see where you removed the strap - it looks like it's breathing again!

Thanks for the comment. I passed by tree in Reply 90  today and realised that just 50m away is another one that is very badly choked. I may get a chance to fixe it tomorrow. My other plan is to release a tree on Parliament Street. It's not where the parliament is, City Hall in fact, and it's very busy but with easy access with a claw hammer.

Stay tuned...

Guess whut!?  The tree in Reply 90 has been completely liberated, check it out

(http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p305/Kristine518/guerrillagardeningdotorg/WP_000029_zpsa581e5b3.jpg) (http://s131.photobucket.com/user/Kristine518/media/guerrillagardeningdotorg/WP_000029_zpsa581e5b3.jpg.html)

and the next tree up the street has been released from its binding....you can see where it had been bound before. And it has a bountiful THREE spacers on it.
(http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p305/Kristine518/guerrillagardeningdotorg/WP_000028_zps228a42f9.jpg) (http://s131.photobucket.com/user/Kristine518/media/guerrillagardeningdotorg/WP_000028_zps228a42f9.jpg.html)

Back up the other end of the street two trees have also been attended to. I'd like to think I had some hand act or part in it!!! ;)

Exhibit 1.  The support post has been cut and the binding lowered and loosened.

I couldn't release this one, it was tied with a rope nearer the bottom and the stake was quite firmly set in the ground.

I needed a visa for my Cuban excursion, so while I was at the embassy, I released this tree outside. Just loosened it, really. Still. It counts.

I can't remember this location.

I can't find the 'before' photo of the first tree.

Here it is, here it is. Found it

then...

but while I was there, outside Rathmines Leisure Centre, I released its buddy.

My next attack. Follow up possibly tomorrow, but I knew you couldn't wait!  ;)

And here it is with guerrilla gardening dog 3 as a decoy. Well, she was being 'minded' for the weekend, and had to earn her keep!

Wow, amazing thread, nice work all - can't believe how tight some of those straps were - surprising how the trees grow when they are so tightly restrained  :-*

And the last tree above, I think, has this mark from rubbing against the support stake.
(http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p305/Kristine518/guerrillagardeningdotorg/Post%20Retirement%20Tree%20Releasing/CplOMlYWYAAe9ej_zpslhu53nov.jpg) (http://s131.photobucket.com/user/Kristine518/media/guerrillagardeningdotorg/Post%20Retirement%20Tree%20Releasing/CplOMlYWYAAe9ej_zpslhu53nov.jpg.html)

so it's freeer (more free?) now.

I may wrap a bicycle tyre around it...

And at the Hardwicke Street Community Garden Open Day last week, I spotted this....
(http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p305/Kristine518/guerrillagardeningdotorg/Post%20Retirement%20Tree%20Releasing/CpG2EQSWYAEizYy_zps1uceakxb.jpg) (http://s131.photobucket.com/user/Kristine518/media/guerrillagardeningdotorg/Post%20Retirement%20Tree%20Releasing/CpG2EQSWYAEizYy_zps1uceakxb.jpg.html)

and asked could they release it.

So,
(http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p305/Kristine518/guerrillagardeningdotorg/Post%20Retirement%20Tree%20Releasing/CpKykTQWYAEK5F0_zpsdzmbtllv.jpg) (http://s131.photobucket.com/user/Kristine518/media/guerrillagardeningdotorg/Post%20Retirement%20Tree%20Releasing/CpKykTQWYAEK5F0_zpsdzmbtllv.jpg.html)

then, released yesterday afternoon...

but the support is 100% supported by the tree, so I'll go back and remove it at a later date.

The first one is previewed a couple of months ago, but the rest are more recent...

While out and about for Open House 2016 today, I released one in front of a house. Will edit in pics at a later date.

Ok, it's a later date. #openhousedublin

In the Liberties, the Coombe.

and...

Cos the queue for the Open House was too long, I released the tree (with an audience) and left.

Carpe diem, carpe diem.

Often I come across trees that need to be released and don't have tools. So, today I brought a claw hammer with me!

What more's to be said? George Michael dead.  :( :'( >:( :o :-\

The other morning, Grove Rd. by Rathmines bridge, I saw this and took a pic.

(http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p305/Kristine518/guerrillagardeningdotorg/Post%20Retirement%20Tree%20Releasing/WP_20161223_001_zpszw644md8.jpg) (http://s131.photobucket.com/user/Kristine518/media/guerrillagardeningdotorg/Post%20Retirement%20Tree%20Releasing/WP_20161223_001_zpszw644md8.jpg.html)

later that afternoon, I had to go back, broken bike, new wheel, a mess, and released this one, thinking it was the same tree.

(http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p305/Kristine518/guerrillagardeningdotorg/Post%20Retirement%20Tree%20Releasing/WP_20161223_004_zpsrulqfd3r.jpg) (http://s131.photobucket.com/user/Kristine518/media/guerrillagardeningdotorg/Post%20Retirement%20Tree%20Releasing/WP_20161223_004_zpsrulqfd3r.jpg.html)

Of course, it wasn't the same tree at all, at all.  Cos I walked 50m up the road and found the first one.
(http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p305/Kristine518/guerrillagardeningdotorg/Post%20Retirement%20Tree%20Releasing/WP_20161223_005_zpsfvowavos.jpg) (http://s131.photobucket.com/user/Kristine518/media/guerrillagardeningdotorg/Post%20Retirement%20Tree%20Releasing/WP_20161223_005_zpsfvowavos.jpg.html)

Thanks.

Saw this across town about three months ago.

Outside Fairview Park when my mother was in a nearby nursing home. She has since moved and haven't been able to get back to see it till today, where I realise it has already been released and the pole removed. Unfortunately the phone is on the blink and can't show ye a photo of it.

I released this tree some time ago, but there's no record of it here, for some reason. Anyway, I noticed afterwards that the top of the protective railing was causing a wound to the tree. Thus...

(http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p305/Kristine518/guerrillagardeningdotorg/Post%20Retirement%20Tree%20Releasing/IMG_20170425_115946_zpscyq7ppkx.jpg) (http://s131.photobucket.com/user/Kristine518/media/guerrillagardeningdotorg/Post%20Retirement%20Tree%20Releasing/IMG_20170425_115946_zpscyq7ppkx.jpg.html)

So I got one of the rubber spacers and a cable tie and tried to rectify the problem.

There's another one nearby that needs the same job done to it. I may edit the photo in here. Check back in a bit...

Sorry abou(http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p305/Kristine518/guerrillagardeningdotorg/Post%20Retirement%20Tree%20Releasing/WP_20170503_20_12_04_Pro_zpsqltvrtuf.jpg) (http://s131.photobucket.com/user/Kristine518/media/guerrillagardeningdotorg/Post%20Retirement%20Tree%20Releasing/WP_20170503_20_12_04_Pro_zpsqltvrtuf.jpg.html)t the delay. The tree had no need to be attended to as it had been released and the cage removed.

Around the oorner, the tree featured in Reply 84 has been given a 'short back and sides'. Trunk has been trimmed and cleaned up. Support stake and tie removed.

Well, that's a pleasant surprise. Most pics are back.

I've released some recently but not posted till I figure out which free photo hosting site to use. If anyone has recommendations, let me know.

Failing that, keep up to day using this hashtag #pleasereleasemeletmegrow

Have a good bank holiday everyone!
