Has anyone suggestions for some good year round hardy plants and soil that'll help them survive the Arizona weather?

Check out bulbil321 on the LA thread on the California board.
Here's their home page...some good examples there...

try aloe vera, cacti,  etc. See what's in the nearby gardens or parks and copy that.

good luck

Check out Native Seed Search, http://www.nativeseeds.org/

They collect, preserve, and sell desert adapted seeds that native americans cultivated here in the southwest and Mexico.

Check it out, it's *really* awesome.

I also learned that African Daisy is very drought resistant hardy flower.
