Title: Guerrilla Gardening - is it art?
Post by: Green_elephant on January 13, 2009, 09:58:13 AM
I got into a huge discussion with some people today, arguing whether GG can be seen as art or not. I was the only one defending it as art (it's got a message, it wants to change things, it wants to beautify, it's communication) and I wasn wondering what you think about it? Do you see yourself as artists??

I think it could go either way really.

Someone seed bombing wouldnt be considered an artist, although there is an art to making them. But i think someone taking the time to beautify a specific area for people to view, would be an artist. As the latter person would be thinking along the lines of aesthetics, not just plants growing. But i guess its all in the eyes of the beholder.

I'm not an artist, I'm a rebel!  ;D

No, seriously... is there even a definition of "art"? Does all art have a message?

'Graffiti' artists express themselves in public places worldwide to make an impact (or some may say 'vandalise' a wall with spray paint). So I consider GG as an art form. I see myself as a 'social artist' giving my time, and creative  talent to the community; expressing my personality and thoughts onto the landsape, - making a statement with colour, texture and form - just the same as any artist would do on canvas or any other medium he/she wishes. GG does not hang or sit in a gallery and is not appreciated by many. GG  is  embraced by nature; that to me means everything.

No critic can ever justify themselves by condemning a beautiful flower!
